Christmas Eve

We love to celebrate and decorate for Christmas , we decorate with a lot many colors but when we think of this eve the most striking colors are Red,Green , White and Golden Yellow and some time Blue . Some of us decorate with only red ,green and white while many decorate with mix and match colors.
There is some significance for each and every color we use to decorate our houses .Have a look about that so that you can not only decorate accordingly to your taste but also you will the significance of the colors used for celebrations.
The significance of these  colors and their meanings come from the western/northern European traditions and customs.
Green:
As green is a color that shows and stands for rejuvenating, refreshing and   a color that   elicits the feelings of spring, a renewal and freshness , Evergreen plants, like Holly, Ivy and Mistletoe are being used for thousands of years to decorate and brighten up buildings during the long dark winter. This shows up energizes people that Spring rises after long Winter. The 'Paradise Tree' in the garden of Eden was a  Green Pine tree with red fruits.

Red:
Red is also the color of Holly berries, which is said to represent the blood of Jesus when he died on the cross.Red is also the color of Bishops robes. These would have been worn by St. Nicholas and then also became Santa's Costume too.

Golden Yellow:
Gold is the color of the Sun and light - both very important in the dark winter. And both red and gold are the colors of fire that you need to keep you warm.Gold was also one of the presents brought to the baby Jesus by one of the wise men and traditionally it's the color used to show the star that the wise men followed.
Silver is sometimes used instead of (or with) gold. But gold is a 'warmer' color.
White:
White is often associated with purity and peace in western cultures. The snow of winter is also  white.White paper wafers were also sometimes used to decorate paradise trees. The wafers represented the bread eaten during Christian Communion or Mass, when Christians remember that Jesus died for them.

Blue:
Blue can also represent the color of the sky and heaven. The color blue is often associated with Mary, the mother of Jesus.  Mary was often painted wearing blue to show she was very important.

Now another important decor for this eve are lights candles and wreaths .
Why do we lit Candles:
Candles were lit and given as gifts to ward off darkness during the shortest days of the year. The festival was originally celebrated on December 17, but it evolved into a week of festivities. As  lights are lit to drive away the darkness and invite knowledge people lit candles on this day.
As innovations took place the candles are replaced with electric lamps but the tradition of candles still continue .

Why do we hang a Wreath:
To a Christian, the Christmas season was a time of rejoicing at the birth of their Savior and to proclaim His eternal promises.  The evergreen would be the perfect component to create the holiday wreath.  It did not worry about the winter and faced the summer sun with boldness.  By shaping it into a circle, the eternal message was continued.  A circle never ends.  It will go on forever.  The same message told through two mediums: the evergreen and the circle shape.
