Today is Yugadi/ ugadi means a beginning of new age and considered as Telugu / Hindu New year eve . This is observed on first day of Chaitra (First month of Telugu calender) Month/ Masam called
Chaitra Shuddha Padyami (generally observed in March/ April ). This festival is celebrated by almost all South Indian States including Maharashtra, Punjab and Rajasthan depending upon their traditions and cultures .
Today Ugadi Pachadi which is a raw chutney is prepared by everyone in a variety ways/ forms (either dry or as chutney ) but mainly contains six different flavors called shad ruchulu . Shudruchulu are sweet (from new jaggery/ sugar / sugarcane ,banana ) , sour/ tangy (tamarind pulp made from new tamarind ), salt, bitter (Neem flower), hot (Optional pepper/ green chili ) , vagaru (Tender Mango ) (acrid) tastes respectively which reflects that human life is a mix of different flavors/ phases of life .
People prepare for the new year by cleaning, washing their houses and buying new clothes. On the Ugadi day they decorate their houses with mango leaves and "rangoli" designs, and pray for a prosperous new year, and visit the temples to listen to the yearly calendar - "Panchangasravanam" as priests make predictions for the coming year. Ugadi is also an auspicious day to embark on any new endeavor.
After worshiping God people prepare the pachadi and take it as prasadam (Nivedhanam ) , and start their meal with this pachadi.
