Homemade Onion Sambaar ( without powder )

Easy and scrumptious sambaar done  with in minutes in your own kitchen  without using any store bought sambaar powder instead I used paste made fresh with spices . This simple recipe leaves in wonder as it tastes just like restaurant made .
Freshly made for one time serving gives best taste of all the ingredients .
This tastes best with rice, idli or dosa .

I used only onions and drumsticks , you can add bottle gourd, tomatoes, carrots, beans as per your taste.


Ingredients:
For Paste :
Toor dal/ Split pigeon pea 1/4 cup
Onions sliced 1/2 cup divided
Black gram 1 large table spoon
Chana dal/Split chick pea 1 table spoon
Mustard seeds 1/4 teaspoon
Fenugreek Seeds few
Cumin Seed 1/4 teaspoon
Coriander seeds 1 tablespoon
Red chilies according to taste
Green Chilies as per taste
Dry coconut flakes  2 table spoons
For Tempering:
Mustard Seeds 1/2 teaspoon
Cumin Seed 1/2 teaspoon
Fenugreek Seeds few
Asafoetida / Hing a 1 to 2 pinches
Turmeric powder 1 pinch
Curry leaves few
Ghee 1/2 teaspoon
Oil 1/2 teaspoon
For Sambaar :
Drum sticks 4 to pieces
Tamarind pulp according to taste
Salt according to taste
Jaggery 1table spoon (optional )

Procedure:
Step 1:Rinse and wash thoor dal , add in few sliced onions along with enough water and cook .


Step 2: Now dry roast all other ingredients taken to make paste (here I forgot to take pic of coconut flakes do fry them at last, as they turn brown quickly)
Now take a blending jar, add in the tempering along with cooked dal and blend into a smooth paste , add water (a little ) if needed .


Step 3: Now in a pan add oil along with ghee , add tempering , when sputters add onions and drumsticks . Cook until onions turn light brown .
Now add in the prepared paste , tamarind pulp along with 2 cups of water .
Bring to boil in medium flame, add in salt, jaggery and boil for 10 to 15  minutes  until it froths .


Step 4: Switth ch off stove and serve with hot rice, dosa or idli 

Notes:

  • If you want make sambaar in thin consistency add in more water as this is a little thick sambaar
  • While boiling the dal you can add all kinds of veggies as per taste 
  • You can temper with ghee and hing and red chilies before serving .
